Climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century (Lancet, 2018). Climate change is the long-term shift in weather conditions, such as temperature, precipitation, extreme weather events, and rising sea levels. Climate change is expected to result in warmer temperatures, longer and hotter summers, and more frequent and/or more severe weather events such as hurricanes/tornadoes, thunderstorms, wildfires, floods, and droughts.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) began a 3-year Radon: Know Your Level study and awareness campaign in 2015. As a part of this campaign, home owners of detached and semi-detached homes were recruited to determine indoor radon levels in the areas of Windsor-Essex County (WEC). The following report summarizes the findings.

This report provides an overview of sun and heat safety in Windsor-Essex County using data from emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths (this data captures illnesses resulting from the direct effects of heat and sunlight). This report also uses data from the Rapid Risk Factor Surveillance System to provide a summary of sun safety behaviours and community support for shade in outdoor public places.
