Breastfeeding Deep Latch Technique

1 Hold your baby tucked in close – tummy to mommy. Aim your baby’s nose to your nipple.

2 Let your baby’s head tip back a little bit. Tickle your baby’s upper lip with your nipple.

3 When your baby’s mouth opens wide, gently bring your baby in closer to you. Your nipple should be in the top half of your baby’s mouth.

4 With correct positioning, your baby’s chin will be touching the breast. Your baby’s lips will make a seal at the breast and your baby’s nose will be close to, but not touching the breast. You’ll notice that more of your areola is showing near your baby’s nose than by your baby’s chin.

After a feed, your nipple may appear longer, but it should still be round. A gentle tugging during the feed is normal. If you experience pain during a feed, break the latch by putting one finger inside baby’s mouth and pushing down on your breast with another finger. Try again. If your nipple appears pinched after a feed or if the latch is painful, you should ask for help.
