Strengthening Infection Prevention in
All Congregate Settings

As part of the Ontario Government's initiative of Keeping Ontarians Safe, local networks of Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) expertise have been developed to enhance IPAC practices in community-based, congregate living settings. Through a new, province-wide network, congregate living settings will be able to access IPAC expertise, collaborative assistance, just-in-time advice, general guidance, and direct support on IPAC practices for both prevention and response.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) IPAC Hub provides services to the following congregate living settings funded by various Ontario ministries:

Assisted living;

Licensed retirement homes;
-
Long-term care homes;
-
Children’s residences;
-
Supportive housing;
-
Emergency shelters;
-
Child and youth mental health treatment programs (live-in or secure);
-
Violence against women emergency shelter and supports;
-
Adult mental health and addictions;
-
Adult developmental/ intervenor services’ programs;
-
Anti-human trafficking specialized accommodations for survivors of human
-
trafficking;
-
Indigenous healing and wellness strategy bed-based programs; and,
-
Youth justice facilities and open secure custody settings;
Goal of the Windsor-Essex IPAC Hub
The goal of the IPAC Hub is to strengthen IPAC knowledge within local organizations and be a resource for education focused on:
- Infectious agents; how they are transmitted, their signs and symptoms, common hosts, incubation periods, diagnostic tests and antimicrobial medicines.
- Infection prevention practices; hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, isolation practices, PPE and immunization
WECHU’s IPAC Hub Team will work in partnership with you to provide IPAC support and services such as:
- Supporting assessments and audits of IPAC programs and practices.
- Supporting the development and implementation of IPAC programs, policy, and procedures
- Mentoring IPAC leads/staff
- Hosting virtual communities of practice (CoP) to support information sharing, learning and networking.
- Offering Educational supports both remotely (virtually) or onsite.
