From January 13 to February 26, 2025, millions of pilgrims from across the globe will gather at Maha Kumbh Mela in India, the world’s largest religious event, held every 12 years. While the festival is a time for celebration, it is important to raise awareness of the health risks associated with international travel and large crowds.

Pre-Travel Recommendations

Healthcare providers should encourage individuals planning to travel to India to take preventative measures, such as:

  • Vaccinations and medication: Ensure patients are up-to-date with their routine vaccinations and refer to the Government of Canada’s travel advice and advisories for recommended pre-travel vaccinations and medications specific to India.
  • Food and hygiene practices: Educate travellers about the importance of safe food and water practices, including proper hand hygiene.
  • Health monitoring: Advise patients to monitor for symptoms of illness and seek medical attention, if needed.

Post-Travel Recommendations

If a patient experiences symptoms after attending the gathering in India:

  • Advise the patient to limit contact with others while awaiting testing and/or treatment to prevent the spread of any potential illness.
  • Monitor for any complications.
  • Report any suspect or confirmed Disease of Public Health Significance (DOPHS) to the WECHU.
