SUBJECT: Q2 Board of Health Effectiveness Survey Summary
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE
The Ontario Public Health Standards (2021), under the Good Governance and Management Practices Domain, states: “the board of health shall have a self-evaluation process of its governance practices…”.
In addition to a yearly self-evaluation process, the WECHU has developed a quarterly self-assessment survey for Board of Health (BoH) members. The survey provides an opportunity for feedback on BoH operations and is used to inform quality improvement efforts.
DISCUSSION
There were 10 completed surveys received from BoH members related to 2nd quarter effectiveness.
Responses related to BoH operations were overall very positive. In all categories, responses were ‘Agree’ or ‘Strongly Agree’. In terms of overall perceived BoH effectiveness, responses ranged from 7 to 10 with an average score of 8.8 (Based on a 10-point scale with 10 being “Extremely Effective”).
Suggestions for improvement included:
- Provide regular financial statements to board members along with program/mandate charts.
- Provide an opportunity for members to review and provide feedback on WECHU marketing campaigns.
- Share final marketing materials with board members to assist with distribution.
- Increase transparency by ensuring that relevant materials related to decision making are provided to board members at least 2 weeks in advance of meetings.
- Create a “Board of Health Portal” so members have options on how to receive information.
