A grant from the Ontario Active School Travel Fund was secured for the region, and will help support active school travel work from January 2021 until June 2022. Six pilot schools across the region will receive a variety of supports to develop and promote school travel plans. A universal approach will provide all schools in the region with resources and promotional material.
Organizations on the committee include:
- Windsor-Essex County Health Unit
- Greater Essex County District School Board
- Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board
- Conseil scolaire catholique Providence
- Windsor Police
- Windsor-Essex Student Transportation Services
- City of Windsor
- County of Essex, and
- Bike Windsor Essex
Pilot School Activities
The six pilot schools for the grant include:
- King Edward Public School,
- Margaret D. Bennie Public School,
- Talbot Trail Public School,
- Holy Name Catholic Elementary School,
- Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School, and
- École élémentaire catholique Monseigneur-Jean-Noël
These schools will be guided through the school travel planning process with support from the committee organizations. The schools will collect student travel data through online surveys, which will provide important information for future initiatives. Additionally, walkability and bikeability checks, infrastructure supports for bikes and scooters, and in-school working groups will aid the pilot schools in boosting their active transportation rates. The information learned from the pilot schools will help direct future work at more schools across Windsor-Essex County.
As the project progresses, updates will be added to this page.
