How often does a child need an eye exam?

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends:

Infants and toddlers
(birth to 24 months)

First eye exam should take place between 6 and 9 months old.

Preschool children
(2 to 5 years old)

Have at least one eye exam between 2 and 5 years old.

School-aged children
(6 to 19 years old)

Have an eye exam every year.

What does the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) cover?

The cost of an annual eye exam for children and youth aged 0 to 19 years is covered under OHIP, if the child has a valid OHIP card.

If your child needs glasses, the Eye See...Eye Learn® program will provide one pair of glasses for free. Visit the program website for age eligibility requirements and a list of participating optometrists.
